Fort Totten sustained severe damage during the Civil War, and extensive reconstruction was necessary to restore it to its former status as a legitimate military fortress. Fort Totten was partitioned centuries later. Some sections were sectioned off for usage by the NYPD, FDNY, and U.S. Army Reserve, and others were turned into public parks. After that partition, all of the buildings that remained were abandoned.
